Endometriosis Surgery

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside it. Laparoscopy is the definitive way to diagnose it.

Your doctor may suggest surgery if you have severe endometriosis pain that isn’t relieved by medication. During the procedure, the doctor can locate and remove some or all of the affected tissue.

Consider your future pregnancy plans, as some endometriosis surgeries can affect fertility. Discuss your options with your doctor to determine the best approach for you.

When Is It Time for Endometriosis Surgery?

Deciding on surgery may depend on your age and overall health. Consult your doctor if:

  • You have severe pelvic pain
  • Medication doesn’t control your symptoms
  • You have difficulty getting pregnant
  • A growth in your pelvic area needs to be removed

What are the different types of endometriosis surgery?

Endometriosis surgery involves removing endometriosis tissue using two different approaches:

  1. Laparoscopy: This minimally invasive procedure is the most common for treating endometriosis. Skilled surgeons use a small incision in your abdomen to insert a tiny tube with a camera (laparoscope). Depending on the case, they may make more than one small incision.

  2. Laparotomy: This more invasive open surgery involves a single large incision across the abdomen. It’s used less frequently now but may be necessary for severe cases or when laparoscopy isn’t suitable.

What happens during endometriosis surgery?

During laparoscopic endometriosis surgery:
  • You’ll be placed under general anesthesia by an anesthesiologist who will monitor your vital signs.
  • The surgeon will make a small incision, typically in your bellybutton or another part of your abdomen. Sometimes, multiple incisions may be necessary.
  • Gas will be used to inflate your abdomen, providing a clear view for the laparoscope.
  • The laparoscope, a small camera, will be inserted through the incision.
  • Using the laparoscope, the surgeon will locate and identify areas affected by endometriosis.
  • Special instruments attached to the laparoscope will be used to remove any affected tissue.
  • Once the endometrial tissue is removed, the laparoscope and instruments will be withdrawn.
  • The incisions will be closed with stitches.
